Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)
refers to wastes generated at home that are hazardous in nature, meaning
they contain one of the following characteristics:
- caustic/corrosive
- flammable/ignitable
- toxic/poisonous
- explosive
- reactive
These products can be recognized by signal words on the label, such as DANGER,
CAUTION or FLAMMABLE.
HHW collections are scheduled at the Recycling Center at least annually.
The next scheduled collection is Saturday May 9, 2009. [There
will be an 'e-waste' collection of electronics and related items Saturday,

information.] However, some items are collected year-round at the Recycling
Center (see below). Examples and sources of HHW items are:

From the Yard - Pesticides, Insecticides,
Herbicides, Muriatic Acid, No-Pest Strips, Chlorine & Pool Chemicals. |

From the Garage- Antifreeze, Brake Fluid, Engine Degreaser,
Carburetor Cleaner, Creosote, Gasoline, Kerosene, Oil-Based and Lead-Based
Paints, Solvents & Paint Thinners. |

From the House- Fluorescent Light Tubes,
CFL
Bulbs, Drain Cleaners, Furniture Polish, Metal Polish, Moth Balls, Upholstery
Cleaners, Photo Chemicals, Floor Cleaners, Spot Remover, Old Chemistry Sets,
Mercury. Electronics: Television and Computer Monitors (Other electronic
items acceptable at the transfer station) |

From the Workbench- Rust Inhibitors, Wood Preservatives,
Wood Strippers, Wood Stains, Paint Thinners, Oil-Based and Lead-Based Paints,
Solvents, Degreasers, Sealants, Resins, Adhesives, Unknown Substances &
Pressure Treated Wood. |
Hazardous items collected year-round at the Recycling Center include motor
oil, auto and marine batteries and propane gas cylinders.
