Water main replacement begins in Wheeler Road

Beginning this week Maietta Construction, Inc. of Scarborough and their subcontractor, Thirsty-Turf Irrigation of Portland, will begin the process of replacing the water main in Wheeler Road from Ocean House Road to Two Lights Road for the Portland Water District.

The contractor will also be installing new 1-inch copper service lines from the new water main to the existing building service line at the edge of the right-of-way.

To maintain water service to homes during the project, a temporary above-ground service line will be installed to residences. This temporary line is typically connected to the internal plumbing system through an outside faucet (hose bib), if available.

The Portland Water District asks residents who have an outside hose bib to make sure it is functional and accessible. Those who do not should contact the water district to arrange for an alternative connection arrangment.

The work is expected to take one to two weeks. "We will try to minimize any inconveniences you may experience during the main replacement project," said Frank Meader, utility engineering coordinator for the Portland Water District, in a letter to residents dated June 19, 2008. "If we need to interrupt your water service for any reason (excluding emergency situations), we will provide you with a minimum of 48-hours advance notice," he said.

"This project is important for us to maintain adequate water quality and service in your area," Meader said.
