School Board welcomes new directors
of athletics, Community Services
While the last business meeting of the School Board for the year is typically
one of "goodbyes," the board took time this month to officially say "hello"
to new administrative staff who will be starting their duties July 1.
Jeff Thoreck, who was hired at athletic director by the board at the end
of May, and Janet Hoskin, also hired in May as the new director of Community
Services, were welcomed by the board at their June 10 meeting.
"I'm really excited about getting things underway and working in such a great
community," Thoreck said to the board. Cape Elizabeth has a special place
in his heart, Thoreck said, and it's been a lifelong dream to give back to
the community.
Thoreck is a resident of Cape Elizabeth and a graduate of Cape Elizabeth
High School, with additional experience as an educational technician and
coach in Cape Elizabeth. He is a 2000 graduate of LeMoyne College in Syracuse,
N.Y., and his instruction experience includes coaching and physical education.
His most recent experiences have been at North Yarmouth High School, where
he has been athletic director for six years, and assistant to the athletic
director and physical education teacher. He has also spent three years as
an educational technician at the Spurwink School, and 13 years coaching various
sports including girls and boys soccer and boys lacrosse.
Like Thoreck's, Hoskin's new position as Community Services director will
feel like home. She has been assistant director of Community Services since
1988, where she has been responsible for directing the extended school care
and the summer day camp programs; facilities scheduling; scheduling and managing
office staff; maintaining Community Center facility operations; and, course
registration preparation and process. She has also designed the award-winning
brochures that detail the courses offered by Community Services each season.
Hoskin has also been head field hockey coach for Cape schools, 1988-1999;
assistant athletic director from 1995-1997; and, varsity softball coach from
1994-1996.
Since 2000, Hoskin has served as registration coordinator for the TD Banknorth
Beach to Beacon race, held annually in Cape Elizabeth.
She holds a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Maine in
Orono, and is a 1979 graduate of Gorham High School. She is a member of the
Maine State Field Hockey Association's Hall of Fame and well as a recipient
of their President's Award; and, she is a member of the Athletic Hall of
Fame at Gorham High School.
"I'm thrilled for the future, and I look forward to the challenges that lie
ahead," Hoskin told the board. "Certainly Community Services is a huge
department, and there are a lot of important decisions to be made. But the
staff that is in place there is an exceptional staff and I know that with
their support, we will go forward and I look forward to the challenges,"
she said.
Thoreck succeeds Keith Weatherbie as athletic director, and Hoskin is succeeding
Sue Weatherbie as director of Community Services. Both longtime administrators
announced their retirements earlier this year.
