Primary, referendum election, school budget validation June 10 at High School gym

Polls will be open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. in the High School gym on Tuesday, June 10, for the state's 2008 primary and referendum election, and for the school budget validation.

The state's new school consolidation law requires a validation vote on school budgets 10 days after their adoption by the local governing body. At a special meeting May 27, the Town Council adopted a school budget of $19,656,037 for fiscal year 2008-09, an increase of 4.6 percent. (Click here for news story).

The Cape Elizabeth validation ballot includes an advisory question, asking whether voters believe the school budget adopted by the Town Council is too high or too low.

Here is a summary of ballot questions that will be at the polls:

School Budget Validation Questions:

Do you favor approving the Cape Elizabeth budget for the upcoming school year that was adopted at the latest Town Council school budget meeting held May 27, 2008 and that includes locally raised funds that exceed the required local contribution as described in the Essential Programs and Services Fund Act?

____ Yes
____ No

A YES vote allows additional funds to be raised for K-12 public education.

A NO vote means additional funds cannot be raised for K-12 public education.

The following is a non-binding expression of opinion for the consideration of the School Board and Town Council.
