Absentee voting underway for June 10 primary, referendum election, school budget validation

Absentee ballots are now available for the June 10, 2008 primary and referendum election. Absentee ballots for the school budget validation vote, also scheduled for June 10, are also available.

The state's new school consolidation law requires a validation vote on school budgets 10 days after their adoption by the local governing body. At a special meeting May 27, the Town Council adopted a school budget of $19,656,037 for fiscal year 2008-09, an increase of 4.6 percent. (Click here for news story).

The Cape Elizabeth validation ballot includes an advisory question, asking whether voters believe the school budget adopted by the Town Council is too high or too low.

Under Maine law, any registered voter may vote absentee. You may do so in person at Town Hall, or request a ballot be sent to you by filling in an application.

Citizens who have already voted absentee, or applied for an absentee ballot for the June primary, will automatically have ballots for the budget validation sent to them.

Applications for absentee ballots are available on this Web site. Applications are in Adobe PDF format, and may be filled in on your computer and printed out, to be mailed or carried to the Town Clerk's Office, 320 Ocean House Road, Cape Elizabeth ME 04107.

School Budget Validation Questions:

Do you favor approving the Cape Elizabeth budget for the upcoming school year that was adopted at the latest Town Council school budget meeting held May 27, 2008 and that includes locally raised funds that exceed the required local contribution as described in the Essential Programs and Services Fund Act?

____ Yes

A YES vote allows additional funds to be raised for K-12 public education.
