Memorial Day 2008 to be marked with traditional parade, ceremonies

Memorial Day will be observed with Cape Elizabeth's traditional parade and memorial ceremonies, said organizer Jim Cox.

This is an opportunity for the community to come together in remembrance of those who have died serving our nation.

The 2008 Memorial Day Parade marshall is Jim Gibbons, who was recently honored with the Silver Star for combat action in Vietnam.

The parade begins at 9 a.m. The parade route begins at the intersection of Fowler Road and Old Ocean House Road, continues north on Route 77, then left onto Scott Dyer Road to the War Veteran's Memorial between the Pond Cove and Middle schools.

A brief ceremony and laying of the wreath will be held at the monument.

The parade will include members of the Cape Elizabeth Police, Fire and Rescue Departments, the Water Extrication Team, Lions Club, Middle School Marching Band, and Boy and Girl scouts.

Parade participants are asked to gather on Fowler Road at 8:15 a.m.

Groups interested in marching should contact Jim Cox at 799-5910.

Veterans of previous wars, as well as active duty personnel, are invited to march. Anyone who has a family member serving in the armed services  is also encouraged to notify Cox, 799-5910, so they can be recognized.

Following the ceremony, residents and guests are invited to an open house at the Town Center Fire Station.

In the event of inclement weather, a ceremony and laying of the wreath will be held at the Cape Elizabeth High School cafeteria. Parking for the cafeteria is to the back of the high school.
