School Board honors staff field hockey, student art accomplishments

Janet Hoskin, Assistant Director of Cape Elizabeth Community Services, was recently inducted into the Maine Field Hockey Association's Hall of Fame.

She was one of five to be inducted into the third annual class of hall-of-famers, and the first player. Up until this year inductees have been coaches and officials.

The School Board recognized Hoskin for her accomplishment at their Jan. 10 meeting.

"Each inductee, nominated by a current member of the Maine Field Hockey Association or the Maine Field Hockey Officials' Association, has made extraordinary contributions to young female athletes in this state, and are the standard bearers for all field hockey officials, coaches and players for the future," said according to the Maine Recreation and Park Association December 2005 newsletter.

Hoskin, who has coached Cape Elizabeth field hockey, was a member of the University of Maine team from 1979-1981. While there she held records for most assists in a game, most assists in a career, most points in a career and career games played, the newsletter said.

Her record of 47 career goals and 104 career points still stands at the University of Maine at Orono.

Also at their Jan. 10 meeting, the School Board recognized seven Cape Elizabeth High School and three Middle School students for recent accomplishments at the regional Scholastic Art Awards and Maine Congressional District Art Awards competition at the Maine College of Art.

Out of nine entries from the High School, four received gold medal recognition, and three were awarded silver. Gold medal recipients will have their work sent to New York to be judged nationally.

Three Middle School students also received silver key recognition.

The awards exhibit runs through Jan. 21 at the Maine College of Art contemporary art gallery space, with an awards ceremony Jan. 21.
