Revised state budget forecasts would increase education subsidy for fiscal 2011

Cape Elizabeth would benefit from $20 million in additional general purpose aid to education next year, as proposed by Gov. John Baldacci in a revised 2010-2011 state budget.

On March 3, 2010, the state Department of Education released revised preliminary state subsidy figures, taking into account the governor's proposed changes to the 2010-2011 state budget.

The revised, preliminary figures show Cape Elizabeth getting an increase in state subsidy, $252,512 more than the $2.6 million allocated to Cape Elizabeth for fiscal 2010. (That figure was reduced by $621,440 as a result of a statewide curtailment announced last fall.)

Asked for comment on March 4, Superintendent Alan Hawkins said, "would 'surprised' be a good one?"

"I was surprised with it," Hawkins continued. "I was not expecting that at all."

Hawkins is slated to present his school budget proposal for fiscal 2011 to the School Board on March 9. He said the anticipated revenue adjustment would not affect the timeline, but he was working to see how the previously unanticipated funding would change the budget picture. "I was just laying the books out right now to see how we're going to deal with it," he said.

The revisions to the state budget are the result of revised revenue forecasts and additional federal money. Baldacci's revised budget restores some funding to education, human services and municipal aid for 2011.

Preliminary state subsidy figures announced in February showed Cape Elizabeth losing approximately $40,000 in state funding next fiscal year.
