Grant approved for energy-efficient lighting at schools, Community Center

Cape Elizabeth has received a federal Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant that will help pay for energy-efficient lighting at the schools and the Town's Community Center.

Town Manager Michael McGovern announced the $85,000 award Feb. 17, 2010.

Along with the grant application, the Town Council last December approved a $51,412 matching appropriation toward retrofitting lights at all three of Cape Elizabeth's schools and the Community Cener. The local funds were from a 2008 bond issued for capital improvements. The grant and the local match enables $136,412 of work to be done at the schools and the Community Center.

"Thank you to all who helped to develop the idea and all who helped with the material leading to the grant," McGovern said, in an e-mail to Town councilors and to members of the ad hoc Alternative Energy Committee.

The estimated payback period in terms of electricity charges is 2.4 years. The payback return on the local part of the investment is a little more than a year, and the 15-year savings is estimated at more than $846,000.

Application for the grant was made to the Maine Public Utilities Commission for the grant funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (federal stimulus).
