Hearing set on recycling, solid waste sections of health and sanitation ordinance

The Town Council will hold a public hearing on Monday, June 8, 2009 on a new section of the town's health and sanitation ordinance that will make recycling mandatory in Cape Elizabeth.

The hearing on the solid waste disposal section of the ordinance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall chamber.

The revisions are the result of Town Council action earlier this year on a report from the Town Council's recycling working group.

"The new proposed ordinance is based on a model ordinance developed by ecomaine," said Town Manager Michael McGovern, in a memo to the Town Council. Ecomaine is the regional solid waste disposal organization that processes Cape Elizabeth refuse.

The new ordinance, McGovern said, "provides that no recyclables may be placed in the hopper at the transfer station at the Cape Elizabeth Recycling Center. Except in the swap shop, no one shall salvage any material from a recycling bin without approval."

The council's ordinance subommittee voted 3-0 to recommend the proposed section for public hearing.
