Longtime school district administrators, educators announce
plans for retirement
Two long time School Department administrators, with combined experience
of nearly 70 years in Cape Elizabeth, have notified the School Board of their
retirement.
Keith Weatherbie, Cape Elizabeth athletic director, has been an educator
in the school system for 41 years.
Sue Weatherbie, director of Community Services, has been associated with
the Town and School Department for 28 years.
A third retirement, from 30-year veteran art teacher Marie Hayes, was also
accepted by the School Board at their February meeting.
"They are retirements I hate to see coming," said Superintendent Alan Hawkins.
Keith Weatherbie is one of only two individuals to ever hold the position
of athletic director for the district. "I have been honored to be the athletic
administrator for the system during the past 21 years, and have seen many
improvements to the program," Weatherbie said in a letter to Hawkins. "These
include the addition of girls lacrosse, girls ice hockey, girls volleyball,
football, girls and boys alpine skiing, as well as the construction of Hannaford
Field."
Sue Weatherbie, in her letter to Hawkins, said that all aspects of being
the director of Community Services have been near and dear to her heart.
In addition to spending more time with her family, she said, "I look forward
to participating in programs and activities that I have spent my career
developing."
Hayes, art teacher at Pond Cove Elementary School, said she was extremely
thankful for the opportunities during her more than 30 years as an educator,
a parent, student teacher and substitute. "I have had the privilege of working
in a school system with the highest standards for professional excellence
for their faculty," Hayes said.
