School Board candidate Mary Townsend was elected to a three-year term by Cape Elizabeth voters in the Nov. 4, 2008 municipal election, and incumbent Katherine Ray also won re-election to a three-year term on the board.

Townsend took the greatest number of votes for a single municipal candidate, 3,785. Ray received 3,205 votes, while challenger Fred Sturtevant received 2,035.

Linda Winker, another incumbent, was also elected to serve the remaining two years of a School Board term left vacant by the resignation of Jack Kennealy. Winker had 2,926 votes, while Piotr Stamieszkin, challenger for the two-year term, had 2,141.

In a four-way race for two seats on the Town Council, Anne Swift-Kayatta won re-election to a three-year term, and David Sherman was elected to fill a three-year term being left vacant this year by Cynthia Dill. Challengers Evan Livada received 2,084 votes, and Mark Zajkowski received 1,971 votes.

Dill was successful in her bid for re-election to the State House representing Cape Elizabeth in Dist. 121, defeating Republican challenger Jessica Sullivan 3,258 to 2,108.

In the national races, Cape Elizabeth voters favored Democrat Barack Obama, who took 4,164 votes in Cape Elizabeth, while Republican John McCain took 2,118 in Cape Elizabeth..

In the race for U.S. Senate, Cape voters preferred Republican Susan Collins to Democrat Tom Allen, 3,316 to 2,950; but favored Democrat Chellie Pingree to Republican Charlie Summers in the race for U.S. Congress, 3,460 votes to 2,776.

Turnout was high in Cape Elizabeth as it was elsewhere in the nation, with 6,400 out of approximately 8,000 Cape voters casting ballots. Information on how many of those were absentee ballots was not immediately available election night.
